On Wednesday, US Senator Claire McCaskill held a web-conference with small business owners from around the state to learn more about their needs and concerns. KSMU’s Theresa Carter reports.
Senator McCaskill brainstormed with many small business owners about possible ways to boost Missouri’s economy. The Senator says that small businesses are the ‘engine of the economy’ and that those who have made it this far, are generally viable. McCaskill suggests that it is essential to help small businesses in order to help the overall economy.
"I think helping small businesses is very important! About 80% of the people that are hired to work in this country, go to work for small businesses. I think it's essential."
Small business owners have said that credit is very difficult to get right now, which hinders their chances to grow and potentially hire additional employees. One thing McCaskill said she heard over and over was that small businesses still need access to that credit, giving them that financial boost.
