McCaskill Unseats Holden

In a major upset, State Auditor Claire McCaskill unseated the incumbent Governor Bob Holden in the Democratic Primary for Governor. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

STANDING IN A UNION HALL IN ST LOUIS WITH HIS WIFE BY HIS SIDE, GOVERNOR BOB HOLDEN TOLD HIS SUPPORTERS TO TURN THEIR ENERGY AND EFFORTS TO GETTING STATE AUDITOR CLAIRE MC-CASKILL ELECTED GOVENROR.

AND CLAIRE MC-CASKILL SAYS SHE'S PREPARED TO REACH OUT TO THOSE DEMOCRATS WHO BACKED HOLDEN'S RE-ELECTION BID.

MC-CASKILL SUCCEEDED IN DRAWING SUPPORT FROM SOME VOTERS WHO PREVIOUSLY HAD SUPPORTED BOB HOLDEN.

ONE OF THOSE IS DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEEWOMAN BOBBIE LURIE.

SHE SAYS SHE'S BEEN LIKE A MOTHER TO BOTH BOB HOLDEN AND CLAIRE MC-CASKILL...THAT'S WHY IT PAINED HER TO CHOOSE MC-CASKILL OVER HOLDEN.

BUT SHE SAYS SHE WAS LOOKING FOR THE CANDIDATE WHO COULD BEAT REPUBLICAN MATT BLUNT.

WHILE DEMOCRATS SAY THEY WILL EMERGE FROM THIS EMOTIONALLY-CHARGED PRIMARY UNIFIED AND READY TO TAKE ON MATT BLUNT, HISTORY SEEMS TO INDICATE MESSY PRIMARIES DON'T BODE WELL FOR THE CANDIDATE THAT ADVANCES TO THE GENERAL ELECTION.

DONAL STANTON IS A LONGTIME DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST AND S-M-S COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSOR.

AND WHILE REPUBLICAN MATT BLUNT HAD CHALLENGERS IN THE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY, HE SAYS HE WAS GLAD NONE OF THEM POSED A SERIOUS THREAT.

AS DEMOCRATS TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO MATT BLUNT, MC-CASKILL AND HOLDEN ARE MEETING TODAY IN HOPES OF PROJECTING A UNIFIED FRONT.

MC-CASKILL SAYS SHE DOESN'T PLAN TO TAKE A DAY OFF EVEN THOUGH SHE'S EMERGED SUCCESSFULLY FROM A TOUGH PRIMARY BATTLE.
