Mercy’s new rehabilitation hospital will be located at Highway 65 and Evans Road, just north of Mercy Orthopedic Hospital.
Currently, rehabilitation services are offered at Mercy’s main campus. Hospital spokesperson Sonya Kullman says they’re outgrown their rehab space in the current hospital…
"We have 35 beds for rehabilitation in the current hospital, and we just don't have enough space for the needs, and last year we actually had to turn people away. We couldn't keep them for long-term rehabilitation because we just did not have the room," she said.
The new facility will offer things patients currently in rehab at Mercy don’t have access to…
"Things like an apartment where people can practice real life tasks that they'll have to be able to do once they leave the hospital, so being able to cook for themselves. Things that they used to take for granted now are really big chores and tasks and it's better to practice in a facility where you have backup, and you have someone there to teach you the right way to do it and an easier way to do it and how to protect yourself while doing it," she said.
The $28 million 60-bed facility, will also feature things like an outdoor walking trail with a variety of surfaces, specially equipped rooms for burn patients, a dedicated stroke unit and brain injury unit and more.
Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital Springfield is a partnership between Mercy and Centerre Healthcare Corporation.
Ground for the facility will be broken in March, and Kullman says it will take about a year to complete.
