Missouri House Chairmanship

Two Springfield Representatives of the Missouri House are chairing committees this legislative season. K-S-M-U's Katie Hummel talks with Representatives B.J. Marsh and Mark Wright about their chairmanships.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE MARK WRIGHT IS THE NEW ACCOUNTS AND ADMINISTRATION CHAIR OF THE MISSOURI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

HE CALLS HIS NEW POSITION QUOTE "NOT REALLY SEXY", BUT HE SAYS IT'S CERTAINLY VALUABLE.

VALUABLE BECAUSE WRIGHT OVERSEES THE INTERNAL HOUSE BUDGET OF CLOSE TO 20 MILLION DOLLARS.

AND AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE 136TH DISTRICT, WRIGHT SAYS HE BELIEVES HIS CHAIRMANSHIP IS VALUABLE TO SPRINGFIELD, AS WELL.

AND WRIGHT ISN'T THE ONLY ONE FROM SPRINGFIELD WHO IS CHAIRING A COMMITTEE THIS SESSION.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE BJ MARSH IS THE CHAIR OF THE MISSOURI HOUSE TOURISM COMMITTEE : A POSITION THAT MARSH HAS HELD FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS.

"THINGS LIKE THAT" ALSO INCLUDE OVERSEEING ISSUES RELATING TO RECREATION AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS.

BUT MARSH SAYS HE DOESN'T THINK IT MATTERS WHAT COMMITTEE A LEGISLATOR IS CHAIRING : AS LONG AS THAT LEGISLATOR IS CHAIRING SOMETHING.

BUT MARSH SAYS FOR NOW, HE'S WORKING ON THINGS OTHER THAN TOURISM.

AND WHILE B.J. MARSH FOCUSES ON THE SMS NAME CHANGE BILL, MARK WRIGHT WILL BE WORKING ON'TECHNOLOGY.

ALL MISSOURI HOUSE MEMBERS WHO WISH TO CHAIR COMMITTEES HAVE TO APPLY FOR THEM.

CANDIDATES THEN HAVE TO BE INTERVIEWD BY A 14 MEMBER HOUSE COMMITTEE BEFORE BEING RECCOMENDED AND APPOINTED.
