Missouri State Names Provost

Missouri State University announced today that Belinda McCarthy will be the university's first provost. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Belinda McCarthy, who holds a PhD in criminal justice, will leave her post as Dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida...She'll begin her duties as provost of Missouri State on July first.

The Missouri State Board of Governors held a closed door meeting today to discuss hiring McCarthy.

McCarthy says she was excited when she found out she would get the job.

The Missouri State Board of Governors decided to create the provost position in September. The duties will include academic strategic planning and evaluation.

McCarthy says aspects of her job as Dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida have prepared her to be provost.

As McCarthy prepares to become the first-ever provost of Missouri State University, she says she has several goals she hopes to accomplish.

Even though she won't officially begin serving as provost until July first, McCarthy says she expects to visit the campus before then to begin working with Missouri State President Michael Nietzel.

McCarthy will have an initial four-year contract at a starting salary of 197 thousand five hundred dollars. She also will be a tenured professor in the department of sociology, anthropology and criminology. She says she does hope to teach after she's had a chance to get comfortable in her new role.

McCarthy replaces Frank Einhellig who has served as acting provost since last July.

He'll return to his role as Dean of the Graduate College and will become associate provost.
