Missouri State University is offering free tax assistance to low income Springfield residents as well as the elderly and international students. KSMU’s Melanie Foehrweiser reports.
The University serves as a VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site. Volunteers are accounting students who are trained and IRS certified to complete both state and federal tax forms. Sandra Byrd, an MSU professor and director of the tax clinic, says the service helps the community and students.
“It gives our students an opportunity to get out and provide services to people in the community that really need them because we help people that earn under 50 thousand dollars a year in family income and they can’t really afford to have somebody do their taxes,” Byrd said.
The VITA clinic on the MSU campus is located in Glass Hall and accepts walk-in appointments Saturdays from 10am until 2pm starting February 4th. For information on other VITA locations in the Springfield area, or to make an appointment, call 864-0030. The last day to file your taxes is April 17th.
