MODOT Prepares for Snow and Ice Removal

Missouri Department of Transportation spends millions of dollars each year for snow and ice removal. KSMU's Mike Smith talks with MODOT Public Information Specialist Bob Edwards about what MODOT and the Springfield area district does to prepare for winter weather.

Statewide, MODOT spends nearly 30 million dollars a year on labor, materials, and equipment for snow and ice romoval, and even though we don't necessarily want to think about snow, MODOT Public Information Specialist Bob Edwards says the agency has to be ready for it.

Edwards says MODOT's Springfield area district, District 8, contains nearly 40 maintencance facilities and 3 new large capacity salt sotrage buildings placed in strategic locations...at Ozark, Bolivar, and Nixa.

Bob Edwards reminds motorists to always drive with care, expecially in work zones, and when snow removal vehicles are on the road after winter weather strikes.

The Springfield area MODOT district uses a fleet of 180 vehicles to clear nearly 37 hundred miles of state roads during winter storms. Statewide, MODOT has salt storage of 300 thousand tons, and 1,800 vehicles to plow and treat 32 thousand miles of Missouri's highways.

For KSMU News, I'm Mike Smith.
