A town in the Missouri Ozarks has received a national designation. KSMU's Michele Skalicky has more.
Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, Mountain Home, Arkansas is a popular place to fish. And now, thanks to a national designation, it will likely become even more so.
Field and Stream Magazine has ranked Mountain Home the 2nd best fishing town in the country. David Osmon is mayor of Mountain Home...
"The fishing in Mountain Home and around Mountain Home is outstanding on the White River and the Buffalo River and on creeks, Big Creek. We have just outstanding fishing here. And, of course, we have one of the largest rainbow trout hatcheries in the United States near the Northfork Dam. It's very good. It's world-renowned."
In the February issue, Field and Stream lists its 20 best fishing towns judged on year-round fishing opportunities, cost of living, fishing culture, outdoor-related economy and quality of life. The towns all have populations under 100,000. Mountain Home is home to around 12,250.
Osmon expects the Field and Stream listing to draw in more visitors...
"I definitely think it will make an impact on our community and I would expect that the fly-fishermen out there will have a little more desire to come and test out this area."
Osmon is thrilled with being on the list but joked that he was disappointed Mountain Home wasn't first. That honor goes to Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
