Moxie Cinema goes not-for-profit

Springfield's only independent movie theater, The Moxie Cinema, has been for sale since last fall. And now it's been purchased by a new NON-profit organization, the Downtown Springfield Community Cinema Fund, administered by a volunteer board through the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. Founding owners of the Moxie, Dan and Nicole Chilton say they're shifting their focus "from work to family." The Moxie shows primarily independent U.S. and foreign films and documentaries on its two screens in the Wilhoit Plaza in downtown Springfield. No significant changes are planned for the Moxie's operations under the new not-for-profit ownership, but the non-profit status will allow the theater to accept tax-deductible donations to support operating costs, with four membership levels being offered. Membership will include benefits such as discounted tickets, invitations to special events and more. Executive director of the new volunteer board is Mike Stevens, who recently returned to Springfield from New York.
