The music department at Missouri State University has come up with a plan to feed the hungry by providing a free concert series. KSMU's Alvin Chen reports.
In the practicing rooms of Missouri State University’s music department, students are busy playing instruments, honing their skills to become professionals in the field of music.
But this spring, the music department is going outside its traditional bounds by organizing Concerts for a Cause. It is a series of free concerts that are open to the public.
Dr. Dianne Strickland, acting head of the music department, says although the performances are free, people are asked to bring a monetary donation that will go to Ozarks Food Harvest, a local food bank.
Strickland says this event is meaningful, not only to the music department, but to the Springfield community.
The first concert, by the University Symphony Orchestra, will be next Thursday, February 12th at the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. In addition, there’ll be two more concerts in February, three concerts in March, and four concerts in April.
Strickland added that this is the 100 year anniversary of the music department at Missouri State University.
For KSMU News, I’m Alvin Chen.
