That’s the sound of the boiler room located in the powerhouse on MSU’s campus.
The powerhouse produces energy such as chilled water for cooling the buildings and steam for hot water and heat.
The Green Kiosk is a web-based tool that currently monitors and graphs data of utility consumption for Plaster Student Union, Foster Family Recreation Center, JQH Arena and 18 other campus facilities, including residence halls and academic buildings.
Lauren Bansbach, a member of Students for a Sustainable Future and previous director of Sustainability Commission for SGA, authored the proposal to fund the green kiosk. The cost was over $61,000 and covered by the student Sustainafund.
“The Green Kiosk project is a tool that can help Missouri State make strategic choices related to energy efficiency. It provides education for the campus community about energy consumption and conservation with easy to read interactive statistics and graphs and those can be utilized for student sustainability proposals, class projects or residence hall energy competitions.”
Tools such as a building automation system and chill water district help to control energy used for campus utilities. The information found using those tools is linked to the Green Kiosk software to collect the data. The software is updated every 15 minutes and shows comparisons of energy usage from the previous week.
Pilar Karlen, energy manager in Facilities Maintenance at MSU, says the hope is to eventually include all the buildings on campus in order to collect more data.
“Having all the information available for anyone to see we believe we’re going to have an input from people in different buildings bringing us ideas and opportunities to make changes.”
In the future, the link to access the dashboard will be included on the energy management website.
