A spokesperson from Missourians for Safe Energy will be at Missouri State University Wednesday discussing the dangers of nuclear power. KSMU's Emily Nash discusses both sides of the nuclear power issue.
The program titled, "Nuclear Energy: Failed Technology or Candidate for a Comeback?" will feature Mark Haim.
Haim is a spokesperson for Missourians for Safe Energy and says nuclear power has never been the answer for safe and effective energy sources.
According to Haim, the recent debate about nuclear power has been triggered by the possibility of a new nuclear power plant in Callaway County in Mid-Missouri.
Mike Cleary, communications executive for Ameren Services, says they have made no decision about a new plant in Callaway County.
At the program Wednesday, Haim will discuss how he believes nuclear power plants are harmful to the environment.
Cleary from Ameren says compared to other energy sources, nuclear power plants are more beneficial to the environment.
Missourians for Safe Energy are advocating using safer, cleaner, and more effective sources of energy such as solar and wind power.
Cleary from Ameren says that all energy sources have an important role in meeting our future energy needs, but are not all as reliable as nuclear power.
Haimm says the best solution for saving energy is improving energy efficiency.
Hosted by the Missouri State Sierra Club, the program is free and open to the public and will take place 7pm in the Plaster Student Union room 314 A and B.
Haim says, energy decisions should not be left up only to utility companies, but should be in the hands of the community as well.
