One + One: A Human Network will be shown at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Plaster Student Union theater. The documentary was produced by six Electronic Arts students who traveled to Kenya, Africa in 2008. This documentary shows how a microfinance movement connects people one person at a time, challenging people to think about foreign aid in a completely new way. Instead of simply supplying food and relief supplies on an as-needed basis, micro-financing organizations provide small loans that provide the tools for poor families to create self-sustaining businesses which can break the cycle of poverty. This film was a winner of the Broadcast Education Association's top award for best student documentary. This filmscreening serves as a prelude to Professor Muhammad Yunas' lecture on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7 pm in Juanita K Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts about how the power of free markets can be harnessed to solve social problems of poverty, hunger, and inequality.
