OTC Sets Tobacco Free Example

A group of college and university administrators, students, and staff from all over Missouri came to the campus of Ozarks Technical Community College to learn about making their campuses tobacco free. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

A group of college and university administrators, students, and staff from all over Missouri came to the campus of Ozarks Technical Community College to learn about making their campuses tobacco free.

OTC became tobacco free on August first, 2003.

Ty Patterson is Vice President of Student Services at OTC and Director of the Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Campus Policy.

He says about three-quarters of OTC students favor the policy.

Patterson says he tells people from other campuses NOT to worry about enforcing a tobacco ban.

Patterson says for more than a year, OTC didn't do anything to enforce the policy, opting instead to inform violators of the policy.

Patterson says educating violators has been a positive and effective approach.

Since OTC became tobacco free in August 2003, it has served as a model for other institutions across the country.
