Ozark Greenway's 'Bike to Work Week' Gets Underway

Waking up on most Mondays is difficult enough, but the idea of a bike ride in the late May heat may seem impossible. However, Ozark Greenways, and their "Bike to Work Week" that starts today, have created some fun and innovative ways to accomplish this task. KSMU's Justin Lux has the details.

For some, the idea of biking to work may seem like a daunting task. Between dodging traffic, navigating the routes of Springfield, and finding a place to store your bike, it may seem difficult or nearly impossible.

However, the city of Springfield and Ozark Greenways have made it possible to easily plot a route that will allow even novice riders the opportunity to enjoy a ride while receiving some much-needed exercise.

“We just launched our new website and we have a Google map on there that shows all the on-street routes so people can look on there and see the designated roads that are maybe lower traffic, wider shoulders, signs for bicycles, and those are the better routes to take.”

Lori Tack is the Program Coordinator at Ozark Greenways and says that she understands people may not live close to where they work so bike riders need to map a route through the city.

“When you take a look at what’s available on the map you can kind of get creative, and even if you live far away, you can combine modes. Maybe bike part of the way and take the bus part of the way,” Tack says.

As part of “Bike to Work Week” City Utilities will be offering those who have bicycles with them free rides. CU buses are equipped with bike racks. Tack says people will be surprised how simple riding your bike as a means of transportation can be.

“Once you’ve tried it you realize, especially a lot of people that live just a few miles from there workplace or their school, it’s quite easy to do in Springfield. It’s just a different type of mindset,” she says.

The week is aimed at improving public health, as well air and water quality, and traffic congestion.

Also, those who participate in at least one day will receive a free breakfast voucher from Panera Bread.
