Police Offer Holiday Safety Tips

Coming into the holiday season, shoppers across the Ozarks flock to Springfield to buy gifts for everyone on their lists. The stores get crowded, the streets get crowded, and the whole city is affected. KSMU’s Adam Hammons has some safety tips for drivers this holiday season.

As shoppers go to and from stores, intersections in Springfield can get pretty congested. So the Springfield Police Department is asking drivers to be aware of the traffic in those areas. If you are not able to cross the entire intersection before the light changes, do not cross. The department says that creates a domino effect, causing gridlock.

Matt Brown is a spokesperson for the Springfield Police Department. He urges drivers to also be mindful of theft this holiday season.

“Make sure and put all of your purchased items in your trunk. Do not leave them laying out in the back seat or even try to cover them with a blanket or something like that. The big bulge in the back seat underneath the blanket is a huge warning sign as well. So it takes a couple extra minutes, but it saves the buyer a large hassle of not only losing the things they bought, but a broken window, (and) the time it takes to get that fixed.”

The police department also suggests to park in a well-lit area that is not isolated.
