Precautions for West Nile Virus Help Decrease Risk

As mosquito season arrives, so does the risk for West Nile Virus. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has some precautions. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

As mosquito season arrives, so does the risk for diseases like the West Nile Virus.

Although Greene County didn't have any positive West Nile Virus cases last year, Karen McKinnis, the Community Health and Environmental Planner for the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, says steps should still be taken to avoid West Nile.

McKinnis says flu-like symptoms are common for people infected by West Nile Virus.

She says in extreme, rare cases can cause inflammation of the brain occurs which could result in death.

Karen McKinnis says there are ways to reduce mosquito populations.

McKinnis says using chemical dunks in standing water can kill the larvae of mosquitoes.

She says there are several ways to avoid mosquito bites: use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants and avoid going outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Karen McKinnis says owners of horses should be aware of the disease and know that West Nile Virus vaccines are available for horses.

McKinnis says the Springfield-Greene County Health Department will be working to protect the community against mosquitoes.
