Crowds began lining up at Hammons Field shortly before dawn on July 30th for a chance to hear President Bush campaigning in Springfield. Mike Smith was at the rally and files this report.
President Bush is back on the campaign trail after spending a week on his Texaas ranch. The President began his day in Springfield where he unveiled a new stump speech saying the nation has "turned the corner on the war on teror, the economy, health care, and education. The crowd broke into applause several times during the Presidents remarks.
Meanwhile, hundreds of chanting protesters gathered across the street from Hammons Field. The group booed loudly each time cheers arose from the crowd inside the ball field. Chants of "No more Bush" also filled the air. The group of protesters included members of the Ozarks Peace Network, the Teamsters, and the A.F.L.C.I.O.
Springfield Police say two protesters were cited after refusing to move to a designated area. A woman was being after being turned away from the stadium and punching a ticket-taker in the chest.
After leaving Springfield, The President headed to Michigan and Ohio for more campaign stops.
