Low-income seniors in southwest Missouri can get training to help them acquire new skills and eventually a job, through a national program called Experience Works. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.
Meet Charlotte Nitz. She says when she first moved to Springfield in October, 2006, she would scour the want ads, looking for a job.
Then, Charlotte found Experience Works, a national program with a regional office in Buffalo, Missouri. She says the program helped her gain skills and confidence.
Eventually, Charlotte landed a job driving a van for OATS, a public transportation system.
Charlotte gives a lot of credit to Experience Works for her success. The program has its roots in an anti-poverty campaign that dates back to the 1960's. It's aimed at helping low income seniors develop skills to enter the workforce. Susan Jackson-Falls is business and community liaison for the regional office of Experience Works, located in Buffalo. The office covers parts of Missouri and Illinois. She says the clients of Experience Works seek services for a variety of reasons.
Experience Works places its clients with non-profit organizations that provide training on site. Jackson-Falls explains.
Jackson-Falls encourages seniors to contact Experience Works to find out if they're eligible to participate in the program. You can reach the southwest Missouri office by calling 1-800-368-7569.
