Reading Roundup Raises Money for Springfield Public School Libraries

The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools and Reading Roundup raised over 10,000 dollars for Springfield public school libraries in September. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

A September book drive raised over 10-thousand dollars for Springfield's public school libraries.

The Springfield Public School District and Reading Roundup partnered four years ago to raise money and books for Springfield's public school libraries.

David Harrison is the chair for the steering committee for Reading Roundup.

He says the partnership came about in an effort to bring all the schools to the highest level required by the state.

Harrison says the partnership raised over 150-thousand books for the Springfield public schools in three years, but gained a net increase of 52-thousand books.

He says librarians have to weed out books to keep information current and accurate and says non-fiction and reference books need to be replaced more often than fiction.

He says book donations are accepted, but cash donations are preferred and that an average of 20-dollars will buy one book.

To donate to the Springfield public school libraries send a check to the Foundation for Springfield Schools at 940 N. Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65802 or call 523-0024.
