Red Cross Receives Funding for AmeriCorps Team

An AmeriCorps team is being assembled in Southern Missouri. Michele Skalicky reports on who the members will serve…

The Greater Ozarks Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for people willing to work for very little money but who are looking for a way to serve their communities. The organization has been selected to receive funding for a nine-member AmeriCorps team in their 40-county region.Luke Bolz, volunteer coordinator for the Red Cross, says they applied for the grant in December in an effort to meet the needs of their growing service area…

"Recently our chapter's gone thru quite a bit of expansion. We've taken responsibility for some territory over in Central Missouri as well as Southeast Missouri, and in those rural areas we didn't really have the capacity to respond the way that we know we need to. So, we saw this as a great opportunity for us to have some people out in these areas to recruit volunteers and to really deliver Red Cross services to people that really need them the most sometimes."

The Americorps team members will be based throughout Southern Missouri. They’ll build partnerships, respond to disasters, teach classes and more. Two will be here in Springfield. One will work to coordinate volunteer recruitment effort for the Red Cross and the other will make sure volunteers are trained and ready to serve. The term of service is one year, and members will serve 1700 hours—or about 36 hours a week. They’ll each receive free health insurance, a living allowance of $10,800 and an educational award of $5,350 for their year of service…

"We're looking for someone who really wants to help their community. That's the key to AmeriCorps. Obviously, it's not about the money. The money helps them be able to serve the entire year, but we're really looking for people that are willing to get out there and just be a positive influence in their communities."

Applications are being accepted thru June 11th, and the program will kickoff August 1st. For more information, visit redcross-ozarks.org.
