Salvation Army Needs More Donations to Meet the Holiday Needs

Many donations have been made to the Salvation Army in the form of toys and money, but it’s still not enough to meet the need for holiday assistance in the Ozarks.  Salvation Army spokesperson Audrey Esther says they’re grateful to everyone who has donated gifts or money so far, but more is needed to meet the needs of those who have signed up for the Christmas assistance program…

"Currently, we have about 9000 toys, gifts and winter weather accessories for the folks who have signed up  for Christmas assistance.  However, in total, we'll need approximately 14,000 of those items, so we appreciate any donations that folks can give us to help those folks in need."

The Salvation Army expects to provide assistance this holiday season to more than 1000 families.  According to Esther, that’s a slight increase from last year.  She says what’s interesting is that many of those who have asked for help this year have done so for the first time.

New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the Salvation Army’s headquarters, 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.  There’s a particular need for items for teenage boys…

"Age appropriate gifts for boys that are 12 to 17 include electric razors, sports equipment, electronics are always really popular even personal care items like cologne sets would be great gift ideas for them as well."

Esther says many more volunteers are needed next week to help with the Christmas program and to pass out items to those receiving assistance…

"We specifically need a large amount of volunteers on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22 during our Christmas assistance distribution, which is when we pass out the toys and the gift items and even food to the families who have signed up to receive assistance, and we have two shifts on both of those days, from 8:30 until 12:30 and then from 12:30 until 5:30, and so if folks want to sign up to help us on those days, that would be great."

To sign up to help, call 862-5509, ext. 116.

The Christmas Assistance Program is part of the Salvation Army’s Tree of Lights Campaign, which includes the Red Kettles.  Funds raised not only provide Christmas assistance to needy families but also are used to provide programs and services all year long.

Around $365,000 toward this year’s $1 million has been raised so far—that’s about 2% behind where the Salvation Army would like to be right now.
