Folks in Greene and Christian counties who would like--but can't afford--to buy holiday gifts for their loved ones can now apply for holiday assistance at the Salvation Army in Springfield. The agency began taking applications Monday morning, and the lobby was packed with applicants. KSMU's Rebekah Clark has more.
If residents feel they need help getting holiday toys for their kids, a Christmas meal or just winter weather accessories, they can stop by from now to next Friday, Dec. 14, and talk to a Salvation Army representative about their specific needs. Based on each family’s need, the applicants will receive toys, food, blankets and other household items. The organization provides this service each year. The group also provides winter necessities for senior citizens and those with disabilities. Audrey Esther is a spokeswoman for the Salvation Army in Springfield.
“We’ve seen recently, over the last year or so, folks that have never had to ask for help before, that have never had to come to a place like the Salvation Army. We encourage folks, even if they are not quite sure but they are struggling; but they think, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t apply for that, I wouldn’t qualify for that,’ we encourage them to please stop by anyway. We try to help as many individuals as we can. You just need to bring the required items.”
Applicants must bring a picture ID, an original social security card for each member of the household, proof of income and proof of residency—something like a piece of mail received within the last six months.
“Our Christmas assistance sign-up is done by appointment; we try to make it as fair as possible for everybody who comes in."
The Salvation Army is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and also from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday nights.
