Schools Investigated for Alleged Cheating on State Tests

Officials within the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education say they've investigated 19 schools in the last year over alleged cheating on the state assessment test. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

STATE OFFICIALS SAY THEY'VE INVESTIGATED NINETEEN SCHOOLS IN THE STATE THIS YEAR OVER ALLEGATIONS OF CHEATING ON STATE ASSESSMENT TESTS, KNOWN AS MAP TESTS.

JIM MORRIS IS THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION OR DESE.

OF THE NINETEEN INCIDENCES THAT WERE INVESTIGATED, ONLY A FEW INVOLVED *CHEATING*.

MORRIS SAYS SOME CASES INVOLVED A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE TEST PROTOCOL.

THREE SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI FACED INVESTIGATIONS BECAUSE OF TESTING IRREGULARITIES: MANSFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THE SENECA SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE BRANSON SCHOOL DISTRICT.

ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS FROM DESE, THE DISTRICTS INVESTIGATED THE CASES AND REACHED A SATISFACTORY RESOLUTION.

NONE OF THE THREE HAD THEIR TESTS INVALIDATED.

DOUG HAYTER (high-ter rhymes with fighter) IS THE SUPERINTENDENT OF BRANSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

HE EXPLAINS WHAT CAUSED CONCERN IN HIS DISTRICT.

HAYTER SAYS HE'S PROUD THAT THERE WAS NO ATTEMPT TO COVER UP WHAT HAD HAPPENED.

HAYTER SAYS TEACHERS UNDERGO EXTENSIVE TRAINING ON HOW TO ADMINISTER THE STATE ASSESSMENT TESTS.

AND HE SAYS THE GUIDELINES AREN'T ALWAYS EASY TO FOLLOW.

THE SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC DISTRICT HAS *NOT* BEEN INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE TESTING IRREGULARITIES WITH THE MAP TEST.

TINA MC-MANUS (MAC MAN-us) IS THE DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT FOR SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

MC-MANUS SAYS STATE OFFICIALS DO RANDOM AUDITS IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO ENSURE TEACHERS ARE FOLLOWING THE PROPER STANDARDS AND PROTOCOL.
