Seven Thousand Citizens Express Opposition to Special Session

Citizens who met with Governor Matt Blunt's chief of staff in Springfield recently say their message is more about healthcare access than abortion rights. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The group, which consisted of both Planned Parenthood officials and citizens presented chief of staff Ken McClure with seven thousand postcards urging the governor to re-consider his decision to call a special session.

The governor has issued the call, asking lawmakers to work on legislation that would place tighter restrictions on abortion providers and would discourage minors from going across state lines for abortions.

Kellie Freeman Rorbaugh (roar-bahk like rock) is the public affairs director for Planned Parenthood of Southwest Missouri.

She says the message from the seven thousand citizens who signed the postcards opposing the special session is about using tax dollars to provide healthcare.

Immediately following the recent meeting in Springfield, Governor Blunt's chief of staff Ken McClure spoke with KSMU.

He says the special session is necessary to deal with several issues, not just the abortion bill
