Severe Storms Threaten the Ozarks

This afternoon, thunderstorms are expected to roll through the Ozarks. KSMU’s Missy Shelton talks with a meteorologist about what we can expect.

Shelton: Joining me on the phone from the National Weather Service in Springfield is meteorologist Gene Hatch. Gene, what are we expecting this afternoon in the Ozarks, in terms of the possibility of severe weather?Hatch: We do have a chance of severe weather this afternoon. The warm front that moved north of the area yesterday brought in warm, moist air that’s still in place. We have a cold front to our west, which will move across the area this afternoon, bringing a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms.Shelton: It seems like that’s the classic set-up for when we do see, even the tornadic weather.Hatch: That’s correct. One of the things we’re expecting today is the chance of an isolated tornado as the storms move across the area this afternoon. But the main threat that we’re looking at though would be high winds and hail up to the size of quarters.Shelton: There was a lot of discussion of the possibility of severe weather yesterday afternoon, evening. That didn’t seem to materialize. What happened with that?Hatch: Much of the energy for those storms remained focused along the warm front which was just north of the area. What ended up happening was most of those storms didn’t make it into the area. Some areas did get some rainfall but the severe storms didn’t’ materialize.Shelton: I take it after the cold front moves through, we’ll see temperatures drop significantly.Hatch: Yes. Temperatures will fall this afternoon. We are looking for a high of 75 this afternoon but temperatures overnight will drop into the mid-20’s.Shelton: We’ll see those cooler temperatures stick around for a few days?Hatch: That’s correct. Temperatures will be in the 40’s for highs with overnight lows in the 20’s to around 30 for the remainder of the week.Shelton: Thank you for visiting with me. I’ve been speaking with Gene Hatch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
