Six Hundred CU Customers Lose Power Following Storms

As storms moved through portions of Southwest Missouri, some parts of Springfield lost power this afternoon. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Homes and businesses throughout center city and the Commercial Street area were without power this afternoon.

Joel Alexander is the spokesman for City Utilities of Springfield.

Alexander says the storm caused a variety of problems for C-U and its customers.

Greene County government offices and courts closed this afternoon after losing power around 1:30...power has since been restored.

Jenny Fillmer Edwards is spokeswoman for Greene County. She says when county offices do lose power, only a few departments have back-up generators.

C-U officials say they've made a lot of progress in restoring power and crews will work into the evening until power is restored to all customers.

Today's power outage was the first chance for City Utilities to try out its new phone system, which is designed to provide better service to customers calling in to report power outages. C-U's spokesman says the phone system performed well.
