SMS Board of Governors Changes along with University's Name

Next Monday, one day after the name of SMS changes to Missouri State University, the SMS Board of Governors will be disbanded and replaced by the new Missouri State Board of Governors. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The change is necessary because the law authorizing the name change also requires that the university's board of governors have one governor from each of the state's nine congressional districts.

That means the board will expand from seven to nine governors.

Governor Matt Blunt today (Thursday) announced the first five members of the new board.

Current governors Mary Sheid, Mike Franks, Michael Duggan, and Phyllis Washington will remain on the board.

Newcomer James Buford of St Louis will join them.

Because there are four governors on the current board from the congressional district that covers Southwest Missouri, Springfield Mayor Tom Carlson, Accountant Gordon Elliott and businesswoman Carolyn Pinegar will no longer serve on the board.

Spence Jackson is Governor Matt Blunt's spokesman. He says the new law requires a significant change
