SMSU hosts Fruit and Vegetable Conference

Vegetable and fruit farmrs from all over the state took part in SMSU's 25th annual Missouri Small Fruit and Vegetable Conference.

Mike Smith has the story:

This year, the conference was held at the Clarion Inn, and featured a trade show, tours of area farms and commercial agriculture operations, and a number of seminars on topics ranging from pumkin pest control to marketing crops and the history of Missouri's fruit culture.

Leah Bonebrake operates the Farm of Hard Rocks in Greene County. She has attended the conference for a number of years and says she always learns new ways to grow, protect, and market the fruits and vegetables from her farm.

Patrick Byers is the Fruit Grower Advisor for SMSU's Department of Fruit Science, and is the Coordinator of the 25th annual Missouri Small Fruit and Vegetable Conference.

He says Missouri's history as a provider of commercially grown fruits and vegetables dates back to just before the Cival War.

Byers is also proud of SMSU's Fruit Experiment Station and its long history. The research center was established by the Missouri Legislature in 1899, and conducts research and advisory programs in fruit production and processing, and consumer education.

For KSMU News, I'm Mike Smith.
