After a 2 month proccess of screening nearly 60 applicants for the position as President of SMSU, the SMS Presidential Search Committee settled on 3 candidates who were then invited to visit SMSU's campuses and interview with the Baord of Governors.

The first finalist to visit arrived on campus Monday February 7th. Mike Smith has the story:

From November 2004 throught the middle of January 2005, the 18 member Presidential Search Committee screened 59 candidates interested in becoming the next President of SMSU, replacing John Keiser who will step down at the end of June.

On Friday January 21st, the committee presented to the Board of Governors the names of 3 finalists for the job: David Belcher, Vice Chancellor and Provost at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock; Michael Nietzel, (pronounced nit-zel) Provost at the University of Kentucky; and John d Sellars, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Syracuse University.

The 3 finalists were invited on campus for multi-day visits which will include interviews with the Board of Governors, open forums with SMS faculty, staff, students, and members of the community; tours of the community and the Springfield campus; and trips to SMSU campuses in West Plains and Mountain Grove.

John Sellars is the first candidate to visit SMSU.

David Belcher will begin his visit February 10th, and Michael Nietzel will visit SMS beginning Monday February 14th.

SMS officials hopethe selection of the next President will be made no later than the Board of Governors meeting on March 18th.

The next President of SMSU will replace John Keiser who, 2 years ago, announced his intent to leave the position June 30th.

Keiser will have served 12 years as SMSU's President by that time. For KSMU News, I'm Mike Smith.
