Snow Impacts Area Blood Supply

More snow today has led to more Community Blood Center blood drive cancellations. KSMU’s Michele Skalicky reports on where the blood supply for area hospitals stands…

A code yellow alert for types O negative and A negative blood has been in effect at the CBCO for a couple of weeks. CBCO spokesman Chris Pilgrim says they’ve lost more than 1000 potential donations due to the winter weather over the last several days…

"We'll be looking to make up those donations in the coming days, and I invite all eligible donors to come into a CBCO donor center or blood drive that's coming to your area and help us make up this shortfall that we've experienced over the past couple of weeks."

But, overall, Pilgrim says, the blood supply is in pretty good shape.Even though many schools called off classes today and the CBCO’s donor centers in Springdale and Bentonville, AR are closed because of the snow, Missouri State University remains open, and a blood drive there continues. Pilgrim expects around 250 people to give blood. For donor center hours and locations and blood drive information, visit www.cbco.org.
