Special Olympics Missouri Needs Volunteers for May Games

Special Olympics Missouri, or SOMO, says it needs volunteers for the 2010 State Summer Games in May. KSMU's Jennifer Moore has details.

Volunteers fill a variety of roles, including scorekeeping, announcing awards, escorting athletes and helping out with the Opening Ceremonies.

The games will take place May 26–28 at Missouri State University in Springfield.

More than 15,000 athletes participate in 21 Olympic-type sports throughout the state.

Special Olympics provides people with mental disabilities the opportunity to stay physically fit, learn about teamwork and experience joy as they participate in the games with their fellow atheletes.

Most volunteer shifts include a minimum four hour commitment.
