It’s almost time for an event that many people in the Ozarks look forward to all year—the Friends of the Library’s spring book sale to benefit the Springfield-Greene County Library District. KSMU’s Michele Skalicky talks with Marcia Kellatot, with Friends of the Library, to find out more…
"How many books do you estimate you'll have at this year's sale?"
"Probably between 125 and 150,000."
"There's no way to know, huh, there's so many?"
"No. We have 2 1/2 large trailer loads of boxes of books."
"Where do these books come from?"
"They come from the public and from culling at the library."
"You always have your 'Better Books' section. Will you have that again this year?"
"Oh, yes." (laughs)
"What are the proceeds used for?"
"Well, of course, they go directly to the library or at least they're pegged directly to the library. We pay for such things as the We Read program, which is a preschool book program for children. We pay for a lot of different things--by we I'm saying Friends of the Library. During the course of the year, we pay for music programs at the library--a lot of different activities that the library doesn't ordinarily have the money for."
"Now, the sale gets underway tomorrow (4/27), and when does it go 'til?"
"It will run thru next Sunday May 2nd and generally from 10 to 8."
"Is it at Remington's again this year?"
"It is."
"This is a huge event for you. What does it take to get ready for something like this?"
"We work on it all year round. We do two sales a year and in between we sort the books that come thru every Tuesday morning. It's a big job, and fortunately all of us love books, so we all do that."
That was Marcia Kellatot with Friends of the Springfield-Greene County Library. They're holding their spring book sale to benefit the library tomorrow thru Sunday (4/27-5/2).
