Springfield high school students presented grants Tuesday to local schools and organizations in an effort to promote getting young people involved in their communities. KSMU’s Alvin Chen reports.
The Youth Empowerment Project, or YEP, is organized by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. It’s a youth-led activity that gives young people the opportunity to positively impact their communities. Springfield’s YEP consists of students from all public Springfield High Schools, as well as Greenwood and Springfield Catholic High School.
Springfield YEP students made their spring grant presentations to six schools and non-profit organizations for projects that will impact young people in the area.
Ryan VanBibber is the Director of Communications for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. He says organizations that receive the grants are actually selected by the Springfield students within YEP.
VanBibber says making decisions of how to distribute the grant money is a great opportunity because students have the chance to be directly involved in making a positive impact.
The six organizations that received the grants Tuesday range from two public schools including Bailey Alternative High School and Bowerman Elementary School. Also, non-profit organizations-Boys & Girls Town, Community Partnership of the Ozarks, Southwest Center for Independent Living, and Royal Family Kids Camp of Southwest Missouri received grants.
