He led the Springfield Symphony in their March concert as one of six finalists for the job. KYLE PICKETT has been Music Director of the Juneau Symphony in Alaska and the North State Symphony in California for several years. Springfield Symphony Executive Director Janice Bennett talks about the voting process.
JANICE BENNETT: There were over 100 applications, and the search committee went through each one of these applications and chose the six finalists.
RANDY: Each of the six conducted one Springfield Symphony concert, and their various musical and pesonal merits were voted on by orchestra members, board members, staff members, and the audiences at each concert.
JANICE: They were all equally weighted. The evaluations were tallied at each concert, and at the end of the process we had the orchestra, staff and board rate after seeing all six. And I do have to tell you, the votes were equal on the evaluation and the tallies on who was number one.
RANDY: So what factors made Kyle Pickett the favorite?
JANICE: Kyle was very personable. He wants to make Springfield his home--he has two children, and a wife that loves the arts also--she's involved with theaters. So he was just well-rounded, and everyone really had a great time while he was in town and enjoyed everything about him.
RANDY: Maestro Pickett has another reason for coming to this area: he was recently named Music Director of the Topeka Symphony, and will maintain a joint residency with the two orchestras while his family will live here in Springfieldf. He'll give up his posts in Alaska and California--but not until after next season.
RANDY: He's gonna be busy!
JANICE: VERY busy man! (laughs) My goodness!
RANDY: That's Springfield Symphony Executive Director Janice Bennett, who says Kyle Pickett's debut concert as Music Director of the orchestra will take place September 28. For KSMU I'm Randy Stewart.
