Springfield/Greene County Named among 100 Best Communities for Young People

Springfield/Greene County is one of the nation's 100 Best Communities for Young People, according to America's Promise Alliance. This is the third year in a row that Springfield/Greene County has received this honor. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The group America's Promise Alliance has named Springfield/Greene County as one of the 100 best communities for young people. Judges made their selections based on five criteria: caring adults, safe places, the chance for a healthy start in life, effective education and opportunities for young people to help others.

Springfield Mayor Tom Carlson explains why he thinks the community has earned this honor three years in a row.

Several people worked on the application for the city and county. One of those was Melissa Haddow, executive director of Community Partnership.

She says the judges have been impressed with the ability of the community to generate funds to deal with problems affecting young people.

Greene County Presiding Commissioner Dave Coonrod says he's very pleased the county and city received the recognition. He says it's a meaningful honor.

Communities selected as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People have a chance to apply for 300 thousand dollars in grants from America's Promise Alliance, beginning next month.
