A daytime star will light up the night this Saturday to raise money for a theatre program that’s geared to give opportunities to children and teens in El Dorado Springs. KSMU’s Missy Shelton reports.
The Lighthouse Children's Theatre in El Dorado Springs is hoping to teach children how to let their lights shine. To do that, this non-profit organization is holding its second annual gala fundraiser Saturday night. Lynne Hedrick is executive director of Lighthouse Children's Theatre. She says a star of daytime television will be the guest of honor.
Hedrick says, “Our wonderful guest star is Springfield-born and raised Jay Kenneth Johnson. You might Jay better as the dark and mysterious Philip Kiriakis from Days of Our Lives. He has been in that role for ten years now.”
In an interview with KSMU, Jay Johnson talked about the message he has for children and teens who are aspiring actors.
Johnson says, “They have to take advantage of the opportunities Lighthouse is giving them. If the kid’s face lights up when they’re doing something, the parents and teachers have to realize that and nurture it.”
Even though he now makes his living as an actor, Johnson says his parents supported him trying a variety of activities when he was growing up, including sports and theater. Lynne Hedrick says she wants the youth of El Dorado Springs to have the opportunity to try acting.
Hedrick says, “We want to give opportunities to children who, not only have the inclination or feel like they could be good at being an actor, a dancer, or a singer, we want to give them the opportunity to nourish that gift, that light, we call it and see if that might something they want to do when they grow up.”
The theater opened its doors to children in March, 2008. It provides acting classes for children and youth ages three to 17. The Lighthouse children and teens present two plays each year to the public. This summer, the troupe will perform its own version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The fundraiser to support the Lighthouse Children's Theatre is this Saturday.
