Statewide Tornado Drill Moved to Thursday

Officials have moved the tornado drill to Thursday at 1:30PM. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

The statewide tornado drill that had been scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Thursday at 1:30PM. Ryan Nicholls is Director of Emergency Management for Greene County. He says the possibility of severe weather tomorrow prompted officials with the National Weather Service to change the date of the drill.

Nicholls says, "This is a statewide tornado drill both for Missouri and Kansas and we're doing in conjunction as a regional effort. There's some concern about some possible severe weather and so, they wanted to postpone it til Thursday so there's no confusion on real, actual weather and the statewide drill."

Nicholls encourages businesses and individuals to use Thursday’s drill to practice their emergency plan.

Nicholls says, “It takes a little bit more than just talking and thinking about it. Once you plan it, it's an extra step to actually test it, to see if everyone can fit in the designated area of refuge, can you get there in a timely manner, do you have concerns for people with disabilities or pets or other concerns. It's just a good time to test and come up with questions and answers about how you might respond.”Nichols says it’s also a good time to evaluate how well you’re able to receive warning information. During the drill, sirens will roar, weather radios will go off, and radio and television stations will activate their emergency alert systems.

Again, the statewide tornado drill has been moved to 1:30PM this Thursday.
