Students Fasting for Victims in Darfur, Sudan

Students across the world will give up some of their favorite things to help victims of genocide on December 5th. It's a day when members of the student organization STAND at Missouri State University and across the world will be fasting from luxury items and donating the money they would have spent to the genocide victims in Darfur, Sudan. KSMU's Jana Greer has more on the nation wide student fast.

Genocide in Darfur, Sudan has been taking place since 2003. There have been about four-hundred thousand people killed and 2.5 million people have fled from their homes. Students across the world are trying to help. Katie Schmidt is the founder of the local chapter of STAND, an international student organization dedicated to educating communities and ending the genocide in Darfur. She says members of the organization will be raising money by fasting from some of their favorite things.

Money raised from the fast will be donated to the Genocide Intervention Network that will use the money to provide aid to the victims. The organization began at Georgetown University in Washington D.C in 2004 and has grown to over 700 chapters worldwide. Schmidt says that she hopes the fast will let people see how easily they can help.

The fast will be taking place December 5. On that day, there will be a table set up in Strong Hall at Missouri State University where you can make a donation or you can visit the Genocide Intervention Network's website by using the link at KSMU.org.
