Health officials say the back to school doctor visits are a great time to have your teens and pre-teens caught up on their vaccinations.
KSMU's Matt Petcoff reports...
With spelling tests and history quizzes just around the corner, parents are being urged to get pre-teens caught up on their shots.
Health officials say kids aged 11 and 12 are usually ready for many of the booster shots as well as a few additional vaccinations.
The vaccines that are recommended include tetanus boosters and hepatitis A vaccines.
Leslie Davis is the Immunization Coordinator for the Springfield Greene County Health Department.
She says it's a common misconception that kids need to wait until they're closer to 16 to get many of their boosters.
Another vaccine for kids this age is Gardasil, which targets the Human Papilloma Virus.
And, Davis says vaccinations for H-P-V may not just be for females in the near future.
While there currently isn't a test or vaccination for males regarding H-P-V, she says that may soon change.
