As temperatures dip down below freezing at night, experts are reminding residents that they can take a few simple steps to prevent their water pipes from bursting. KSMU’s Ryan Welch has these tips.
Water is one of the few liquids that actually expands when it freezes. In fact, the water in an ice cube tray expands nine percent when it goes from the liquid to the solid stage. That’s why during extremely cold weather, you often hear of pipes bursting.
Master plumber Chris Hoffman is the owner of All Klear Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling in Springfield. He says there are several things homeowners can do to take care of their pipes.
“Most people use a lot of cold water during the day, but not the hot. You know, on extreme cold days or cold nights, you might want to turn the hot faucet on a little bit to keep the hot side from freezing,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman says to also leave the cabinet doors open to allow the heat of the room to reach the pipes under the sinks, and keep them warmer.
He says to make sure all vents under the house are closed to keep drafts down. Also be sure to seal any cracks and crevices in the foundation of your house so there aren’t any cold drafts up against the pipes.
“Make sure that your pipes are insulated. If you live in a house that’s real drafty in the foundation area…if your house is real drafty, you might want to consider insulating your pipes,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman also says that garden hoses should be taken off their faucets outside.
