There are lots of treadmills in CoxHealth’s Meyer Center. But one in particular Wednesday stood out. In front of it was a sign letting people know that this treadmill was being used for a walkathon to highlight the importance of physical activity in living a heart healthy life.Colleen Young is coordinator of the mind/body fitness program and walking coach at Cox fitness centers…

"Walking as far as fitness is really coming into its own. It used to be walking was strolling. Now walking, people are realizing, can build aerobic capacity, and that's really what you're looking for in strength, in breathing and your cardio output."

Colleen Young says walking is something most anyone can do…

"It's not expensive--a good pair of shoes on your feet, and you're ready to go. And when we think of a country that is trying to improve on healthcare, this is the cheapest way to go, and it's so inclusive. You can walk anywhere, young and old."

According to the American Heart Association, walking briskly for just 30 minutes a day can lower both bad cholesterol—LDL—and blood pressure. For KSMU New, I’m Michele Skalicky.
