Trout season opens at Missouri's State Parks. Mike Smith has this report:
To some it's a right of Spring. To others it's a right of passage. To all who annually take part in the official opening of trout season at Missouri's State Parks, it's simply right.
Chris Vitello is the Missouri Department of Conservation's Southwest Region Fisheries Supervisor. He says opening day of trout season always bring old friends and relatives together for the chance to catch up on old times and of course to catch fish. Vitello expects thousands of anglers will toss lines into the waters of Missouri State Parks when the whistle sounds at each location announcing the beginning of a 7 month season to catch a fish that's not native to the state.
The Missouri Department of Conservation does not maintain Brown Trout brood stock at its hatcheries. They come directly from the wild. The department does though raise Rainbows at its hatcheries, and transports all trout from hatchery to stream in a variety of ways.
Gene and Helen Daley from Lebanon Missouri were chosen to officially start the season at Bennett Springs State Park near their hometown. They have been fishing there since 1947, and are a welcome and familar sight to those who work at the park.
Gene is 92 years old, Helen is 85, and their children, grand chidren, and great grand children have all fished at Bennett Springs too.
The trout season in state parks continues through the end of October, but in many of Missouri's streams and rivers, the season continues year round. For KSMU News, I'm Mike Smith.
