Trout Season is Underway

It's March 1st--opening day of trout season. KSMU's Michele Skalicky has more...

Sirens sounded and guns were fired at 6:30 this morning to mark the opening of trout season. Thousands of anglers braved the cold at Montauk, Bennett Springs and Roaring River State Parks. Jerry Dean, hatchery manager at Roaring River, says 6100 fish were added to the river along with 50 lunkers, and the area below the park was stocked.Firing the gun this morning was Betty Bruner Layton, the granddaughter of the hatchery’s founder…

"She actually lived here from 1921 thru 1927 with her grandparents, and they are the ones who started the hatchery--the first hatchery at Roaring River. They built it in 1910, and the also rebuilt the old mill that was here and turned it into a motel and restaurant and started a resort. They built cabins."

The hatchery is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Fisherman this morning received a free coffee mug as a keepsake…

"And it'll say 'Trout Opening 2010. Roaring River Hatchery Centennial.'"

Free coffee is served along the banks of the river at trout season opening day each year and barrels of wood are lit to keep anglers and onlookers warm.Trout season runs thru October 31st.
