University Celebrates One Year as Missouri State

Missouri State University celebrates its first birthday with a new name complete with barbeque, birthday cake and a band. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

Students and faculty of Missouri State University hailed their alma mater today with a birthday party.

Today's birthday bash marks the name change from Southwest Missouri State University to Missouri State University one year ago.

The university is 101 years old.

Thomas Lane is the director of the Plaster Student Union and the assistant dean of students.

The celebration got underway today at 4:30 with free barbeque and birthday cake, a performance by the Missouri State marching band, the Sugar Bears, and the cheerleading squad.

Lane says the birthday party is also a way to demonstrate the university's public affairs mission with a baby supply drive.

Any baby supplies like diapers, bottles and wipes brought to the event will be donated to the Family Violence Center.

Hundreds of people turned out for the birthday bash.

Thomas Lane says he hopes Legacy Day will become an annual event.
