U.S. House Approves Funds for CASE and Local Companies

Funding for SMSU's Center for Applied Science and Engineering and the Jordan Valley Innovation Center has cleared the U-S House of Representatives. The defense spending bill also includes funding for Springfield area companies and two companies in Joplin. KSMU's Missy Shelton files this report.

THE DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS BILL INCLUDES A TOTAL OF 36 POINT 9 MILLION DOLLARS FOR COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI.

INCLUDED IN THAT TOTAL IS 4 POINT 4 MILLION DOLLARS FOR CONVERTING THE OLD M-F-A MILL IN SPRINGFIELD INTO THE JORDAN VALLEY INNOVATION CENTER.

THAT FACILITY WILL BECOME PART OF S-M-S-U'S CENTER FOR APPLIED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OR CASE.

THE DEFENSE SPENDING BILL INCLUDES 20 POINT 5 MILLION DOLLARS FOR CASE AND THREE PRIVATE COMPANIES WORKING WITH CASE.

SOUTHWEST MISSOURI CONGRESSMAN AND HOUSE MAJORITY WHIP ROY BLUNT SAYS CASE AND THE PRIVATE CORPORATIONS WORKING WITH THE INSTITUTION ARE ENGAGED IN RESEARCH THAT WILL HELP WITH HOMELAND SECURITY.

THE POSSIBILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNDING WAS GOOD NEWS FOR CASE OFFICIALS.

RYAN GIEDD IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CASE AND THE JORDAN VALLEY INNOVATION CENTER.

HE SAYS THE FUNDING FOR THE INNOVATION CENTER IS KEY.

AND AS COMPANIES MOVE TO SPRINGFIELD, HOUSE MAJORITY WHIP ROY BLUNT SAYS THAT WILL BE A BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

THE COMPANIES WORKING WITH CASE ARE INVOLVED IN TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT THAT COULD HELP WITH DEFENSE.

CASE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RYAN GIEDD.

THE BIGGEST APPROPRIATION FOR A COMPANY THAT'S WORKING WITH CASE WOULD GO TO NANTERO.

GIEDD SAYS THE COMPANY IS WORKING WITH CASE TO DEVELOP APPLICATIONS THAT CAN BE USED IN SPACE.

THE FUNDING IN THE DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS BILL IS FAR FROM A DONE DEAL.

IT'S CLEARED THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES BUT NOW MOVES TO THE SENATE FOR DEBATE AND CONSIDERATION.

HOUSE MAJORITY WHIP ROY BLUNT SAYS HE EXPECTS MISSOURI'S SENATORS TO DO WHAT THEY CAN TO SECURE THE 36 POINT 9 MILLION DOLLARS FOR COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI.
