Vice President Dick Cheney Campaigns in Springfield

Vice President Dick Cheney was in Springfield today at the Springfield Exposition Center for a campaign rally. KSMU's Missy Shelton was there and files this report.

SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE GAVE VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY AND HIS WIFE A WARM WELCOME.

LYNNE CHENEY SPOKE TO THE CROWD FIRST.

THERE WERE A NUMBER OF SIGNS GREETING THE VICE PRESIDENT WHEN HE TOOK THE STAGE IN DOWNTOWN SPRINGFIELD.

HE SPOKE ABOUT A NUMBER OF THINGS: THE IMPROVING ECONOMY, THE PRESIDENT'S TAX CUT PACKAGE, THE NEED FOR AN ENERGY PLAN.

BUT HE MOST OF HIS REMARKS CENTERED AROUND THE WAR ON TERROR.

CHENEY TOLD THE CROWD THAT WHEN THE U-S HANDS OVER POWER IN IRAQ NEXT WEEK, THE MOVE WILL BE A STRIKE AGAINST TERRORISTS.

SOME DEMOCRATS HAVE EXPRESSED CONCERNS ABOUT HOW THE ADMINISTRATION IS HANDLING POST-WAR IRAQ.

CONGRESSMAN DICK GEPHARDT CALLED K-S-M-U LATE LAST WEEK IN ANTICIPATION OF CHENEY'S VISIT.

HE CRITICIZED THE ADMINISTRATION FOR AWARDING CONTRACTS TO PRIVATE COMPANIES.

GEPHARDT ALSO SAYS EVEN WITH THE HANDOVER OF POWER COMING UP NEXT WEEK, THERE SHOULD BE MORE TROOPS IN IRAQ.

THE VICE PRESIDENT DID NOT TAKE QUESTIONS FROM THE MEDIA SO THERE WAS NO OPPORTUNITY TO ASK HIM TO RESPOND TO THESE COMMENTS.

BUT CHENEY DID SAY DURING HIS SPEECH THAT THE ADMINISTRATION HAS DONE ITS BEST TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR TROOPS WHO ARE OVERSEAS.

BESIDES TALKING ABOUT THE WAR ON TERROR, THE VICE PRESIDENT ALSO PRAISED THE PRESIDENT'S ECONOMIC STIMULUS POLICIES.

BUT THOSE STATISTICS DO LITTLE TO CONVINCE SOME UNION WORKERS.

MEMBERS OF THE A-F-L-C-I-O PROTESTED OUTSIDE THE CAMPAIGN RALLY.

THEY WERE JOINED BY MEMBERS OF THE PEACE NETWORK OF THE OZARKS AND OTHERS LIKE JORDAN HOBBS.

HOBBS IS A STUDENT HERE IN SPRINGFIELD AND A NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR.

HE CAME TO PROTEST THE CAMPAIGN STOP AND BROUGHT A SIGN.

HOBBS SAYS HE'S CONCERNED ABOUT THE PATRIOT ACT, THE LAW CONGRESS PASSED AFTER 9-11 TO EXPAND ANTI-TERROR AUTHORITY.

HOBSS SAYS IT GOES TOO FAR.

HOBBS SAYS HE'S ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE SITUATION IN IRAQ.

BUT CHENEY SAID DURING THE RALLY THAT THE HANDOVER OF POWER WILL BE A SUCCESS.

HE POINTED TO WHAT'S HAPPENED ALREADY IN AFGAHNISTAN.

THE CAMPAIGN RALLY WASN'T THE VICE PRESIDENT'S ONLY STOP IN SPRINGFIELD...BEFORE COMING TO THE RALLY, HE STOPPED BY BASS PRO SHOPS.
