Weekend Outlook March 9-11, 2012

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are some ideas...
  • The Discovery Center of Springfield invites you to take part in the Citizen Science—Globe at Night Project.  A training session will be held tonight (3/9) from 6 to 8 on how to collect data for the project.  The cost is $1 per person.  For details, 862-9910.
  • The MSU Baseball Bears will take on SIUE this afternoon (3/9) at 3, tomorrow afternoon (3/10) at 2 and Sunday afternoon (3/11) at 1 at Hammons Field.  For tickets, 836-7678.
  • Ozarks Medical Center will hold a Volunteer Recruitment Fair today (3/9) from 10 to 1 in the OMC Parkway Education Center.  Find out about volunteer opportunities at OMC.
  • The MSU Biology Department will host a seminar this afternoon (3/9) at 4 in Temple Hall, room 1.  Jon Shurin with UC San Diego will present “Climate Warming Changes Top-Down and Bottom-Up Control of Pond Food Webs.”  The event is open to the public.
  • A dance is held each Friday night at 7 at the West Plains Senior Center.  Admission is $4, and all ages are welcome.
  • The Heart of the Ozarks Bluegrass Association hosts Acoustic Jam on the Square Friday nights at 7.  The Acoustic Country, Folk & Rock Jam is held at the West Plains Music Store, and a Bluegrass Jam is at #1 Evans Arcade.  Take chairs if you just want to listen or chairs and instruments if you want to join in.
  • Several storytimes are being offered today (3/9) at various Springfield-Greene County Library branches.  For more information, www.thelibrary.org.
  • MSU, through VITA, is offering free tax preparation.  A session will be held today (3/9) from 11 to 3 at MSU-West Plains Lybyer, 211.  Sessions will be held tomorrow (3/10) in Glass Hall from 10 to 2.  For more information, 1-800-427-4626.
  • The Park Central Branch Library will host the program “How to:  Urban Farming and CSA’s” tonight (3/9) at 7 for adults.  The operators of Urban Roots Farm will how an environmentally and financially sustainable farm can exist within city limits on only one and a half acres.
  • The Greater Ozarks Audubon Society will offer a bird-watching trip to the Bois d’Arc Conservation Area northwest of Springfield tomorrow (3/10).  Meet at 5 pm in the northwest corner of the parking lot of the Walmart at W. Bypass and Sunshine.  The trip is free and open to anyone.  For more information, 725-9481.
  • The MSU softball team will face Iowa State tomorrow (3/10) at noon and 2 and Sunday (3/11) at noon at Killian Softball Complex.  For tickets, 836-7678.
  • The Parkview High School National Honor Society will host a craft fair tomorrow (3/10) from 8 to 4 in the Parkview Gym.  Proceeds will go to the Viking Endowment Fund. 
  • The Farmers Market of the Ozarks is open tomorrow (3/10) from 9 am to 1 pm at the corner of Republic Rd. and National.
  • MSU’s Association of International Students will host the AIS International Dance tomorrow night (3/10) from 6 to 9 in Plaster Student Union, room 300.  The event will feature lessons in many different forms of dancing from all over the globe as well as a bake sale to raise money for Relay for Life.  Admission is free.  For more information, 569-7780.
  • Learn to make homemade laundry soaps and green cleaners during a program tomorrow afternoon (3/10) from 1:30 to 4 at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.  To register,  881-8909 or www.extension.missouri.edu/greene.
  • Drury’s Kappa Delta Sorority will host Shamrockin’ the Roads, a 5K run/walk, 10K run and 1 mile kids’ fun run tomorrow morning (3/10) at 8.  To register, www.drurykd.org.  Proceeds will benefit Isabel’s House and Prevent Child Abuse America.
  • Building Healthy Families, a conference on autism, will be held tomorrow (3/10) at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center.  For more information, www.thearcoftheozarks.org.
  • The Library Center presents “Saturday Afternoon at the Movies” tomorrow afternoon (3/10) at 2.  See “The Thin Man,” a comic detective film based on the writings of Dashiell Hammett.  Popcorn will be provided.
  • The Springfield and Willard Post Offices will host Passport Fairs tomorrow (3/10) to provide passport information and accept passport applications.  The Springfield Passport Fair will be from 9 am to 1 pm at the post office at 500 W. Chestnut Expressway and the Willard Fair is from 8:30 to 11 am at the Willard Post Office. 
  • The Sunday Concert Series continues Sunday afternoon (3/11) at 2 at the Library Center featuring the bluegrass band WHOgrass.  Admission is free.
