When Vice President Dick Cheney speaks to the National Convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, meeting in Springfield this week, many wounded veterans attending the meeting hope Cheney will talk about issues related to funding Veterans programs. Mike Smith has the story:
Ray Funderburk, the Military Order of the Purple Heart's National Director of Public Relations, says he hopes Vice President dick Cheney will talk about what Funderburk calls "the urgent need for Veterans funding". He says some members of the organization are concerned that some government officials are talking about closing V.A. Hospitals. Funderburk says "you don't close V.A. Hospitals with a war going on".
There are other issues as well. After a veteran asks Funderburk why the Vice President, who received 5 draft deferments in the early to mid 1960's, was invited to speak to the group, he said the answer is clear. "He is the second in command of our Military, and if somthing God forbid would cause the President to be unable to stay in office, the Vice President would be the Commander In Chief".
