Winter Storm Could Affect Blood Supplies

Blood supplies in the area could be hurt by the winter storm that's affecting the Ozarks today. Michele Skalicky has more.

The latest batch of winter weather could affect blood supplies in the area. The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks was already under a code yellow alert for A negative, B negative and O negative blood types before the storm hit. Chris Pilgrim is a spokesman for the CBCO.

"Of course Bolivar High School was a large drive that was supposed to go on Monday, an 80 unit drive that was cancelled. Drives in Neosho, Nixa, Kimberling City, Forsyth, Strafford, just about all of our mobile unit drives today are awash except for the ones down in Arkansas. Now tomorrow, Tuesday, we've only had one cancellation so far. We're hopeful that things will improve a little bit and we'll be able to get some blood and some donors in the door."

Donor centers are open in Springfield at 2230 S. Glenstone until 6 tonight and in Springdale, AR, 3503 Thompson, until 7 tonight. Pilgrim hopes a blood drive on the Missouri State University campus tomorrow thru Thursday will help build reserves back up. For more information, call the CBCO at 227-5000 or go to cbco.org.
